Improvisation with S.M.I.L.E. (2009)

S.M.I.L.E. is a spherical media instrument for live environments used for improvisation.

S.M.I.L.E. is used as a controller/instrument for live audio-visual performance. The interface uses proximity sensors, accelerometers and various buttons and knobs for control. S.M.I.L.E. also makes good use of light (LEDs), which augment the performers gesture.

Media can extend into our material environment through sensors and interfaces and draw upon the immediacy of body movement, gesture and physiology. The prime area of creative work in this project is the convergence of audio-visual content with physical movement, as well as how as an “intelligent” software environment can respond to the player’s activity.

The piece is performed with a sonic environment created in Pure Data using sound synthesis techniques, which is used in conjunction with the S.M.I.L.E. interface.
