Unexpected Moments - Mobile Documents

“Capture unexpected moments—take, view, store and send 15-second
video clips with a Sprint PCS Vision Video Phone.” - http://www.sprintpcs.com
The mobile video phone brings to mind photography, slides, the Polaroid or 8mm
film that capture moments of familial birthdays, pets, child-life, vacation or
other locale. Instead of passing around the developing image or gathering around a
projection on a white sheet (or screen if Dad was an elite) to watch these family
dogma-esque splatters of light-color and form, more and more of today’s
individuals carry pocket size image makers that instantly connect and send content
via the web and email to be archived and exchanged. These media projects are
no longer only father’s domain of home movie product, but constitute an
instantaneous, moment-to-moment document and exchange by the diverse mobile phone
lugging population. Bringing telecommunication into the realm of the visual,
what does this mobile distribution of representation mean for the ordinariness
of a Midwestern-American family of two dads, teenage playfulness, a birthday
party at a small town gay and lesbian bar, a farmer’s market or the personality
of a cat?
Using a videophone and its 15-second short audio and video mediabyte to trace
sometimes intimate, inane, poignant, and contrived moments of pocketed mobile
media, Unexpected Moments - Mobile Documents explores the audio-visuality of
pets, the adopted children of two dads, big box shopping and more
to create an evocative collage of moments of real reality
programming- in the
evolution of visual distance communication.
